What to do during your next “playcation”
“Playcation” is one of the new word suggestions in the Collins English Dictionary. It means: “A vacation consisting of play especially from a child’s perspective.” That sounds fun whether you’re a kid or not, but if your family is looking for their next playcation, look no further than South Padre Island.
For starters, there’s the beach. Miles of soft white sand and about 300 days of sunshine– it’s what people love about South Padre Island. Swim in the surf, build sandcastles, relax in mild, year-round weather and visit one of the many parks. There’s enough to do on the beach to keep everyone busy for hours. You might even spot a few dolphins!
If you don’t spot any dolphins on the beach, head out to any of the many dolphin cruises. You’re likely to see dolphins any time of year thanks to the warm, productive waters that surround SPI. Osprey Cruises is a great option for families with kids. The touch tank gives kids close encounters with small sea critters and the crew is knowledgeable about the sea life in the area.
Sometimes for kids (and adults), the ocean is a scary place. If poolside is more your scene, head over to Schlitterbahn water park. Go for thrills in the wave pool or the cyclone slide, or relax and let your little ones run off their steam in the area for young children. Parking is free, the park is open all the way until January and you can bring in coolers with snacks and drinks (just no glass).
Your South Padre Island playcation will even keep teens happy. Parasail over the sea for amazing views or rent jet skis for a thrilling way to enjoy the ocean. The island setting is great for family pictures or quick snapchats sent out to friends.
And of course, how could your island retreat be complete without great food? There’s fresh seafood in abundance– buttery crab legs, crispy fried shrimp and fresh caught fish– they’re all on the menu. You won’t be short on American favorites either. Hamburgers, chicken fingers, steak and pizza are just a few of the dishes that restaurants in SPI are serving up.
No matter where you’re from, if you’re young or young at heart, your next playcation should include a slice of the island life.
