Know before you go

Schlitterbahn is a large water park and resort located close to the beach. There are indoor and outdoor attractions for all age ranges as well as food vendors and restaurants. Parking is free and picnics are allowed except for glass and alcohol. You can bring your own food and drinks to cut down on park costs. It’s worth it to buy a season pass if you plan on visiting 3 times or more a summer. Stay on the resort or visit for a day!

  • Schedule:
    • Schlitterbahn is open weekends starting mid-April and daily from mid-May to Labor Day. Check their website for exact dates.
    • Schlitterbahn’s heated indoor attractions are open during the weekend from mid-September to the beginning of January. Check their website for exact dates.
    • Parking is free and picnics are allowed except for glass and alcohol. Bring your own food and drinks to cut down on park costs.   

Family friendly

  • Schlitterbahn accommodates all age-ranges. For the thrill seekers, there are plenty of slides and rides. The indoor children’s pool is a great place to get out of the sun and let your little ones get their wiggles out. The lazy river is open to all ages. Rides are connected to the river, allowing you to float while you wait.

Associated costs

  • Parking, inner tubes, life vests and boogie boards are free. You can bring in coolers with food and drinks for free as long as there is no glass and alcohol.
  • Prices are broken down into tickets, season passes, and lodging. Check Schlitterbahn’s operation schedule to make sure the park and attractions are open on the days you plan to go.

Located near Schlitterbahn, Breakaway Cruises offers a wide range of water activities. If you book multiple activities, make sure to double check your schedule with them when you check in. During their hour long guided jet ski tour you will see dolphins, shrimp boats, and a large bay. It’s not a jet ski free for all, so make sure to stay with your tour guide.

Family friendly:

  • Children must be 13 years old to operate a jet ski by themselves. Children younger than 13 can ride with an adult who is at least 18 years old. Jet ski rides are not suitable for very young children.

  • The jet ski tour is $95 per driver and $20 per passenger.

Know before you go:

  • Parrot Eyes is a restaurant, bar and marina. Save the drinks for after your jet ski tour though– it’s illegal to operate a jet ski while intoxicated. Parrot Eye’s offers 1, 2, and 3 seat jet skis. Morning is the best time to avoid congestion and don’t forget to bring sunglasses or goggles, you don’t want your experience ruined by salt water spray in your eyes.

Family friendly:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to rent a jet ski. Children younger than 18 can ride with an adult who is at least 18 years old. Jet ski rides are not suitable for very young children.  

Associated costs:

  • Jet ski rental prices vary by date, time and jet ski size but usually start around $75 for an hour. You can book a rental online or in person.

Know before you go:

  • The marina at Coconuts offers single and 2 seat jet skis. Skip the drinks until after your tour, it’s illegal to operate a jet ski while intoxicated. There is no online booking, instead call 956-761-4218 to make a reservation and receive pricing information. Don’t forget to bring a valid driver’s license to your reservation. It’s also recommended to bring sunglasses or goggles so saltwater spray doesn’t ruin the experience.

Family friendly:

  • You must be at least 24 years old to rent a jet ski. If you are younger than 24, you need a boater’s safety card to rent a jet ski. Children younger than 18 can ride with an adult who is at least 18 years old. Jet ski rides are not suitable for very young children.

Associated costs:

  •  Tour prices range by date, time, the length of rental and jet ski size but tours usually start around $75 for half an hour. A deposit is required for all jet ski rentals.

Eh Brah is a small local operation that offers stand up paddle board tours and lessons. Stand up paddleboarding or, SUP, utilizes a board thicker than a surfboard and a long paddle to paddle around calm bodies of water while standing. Guided tours with Eh Brah include life preservers, booties, cold bottled water and sunscreen.     

Family friendly:

  • Stand up paddle boarding is for all ages. If there is no wind, children as young as 2 can go out safely into shallow areas. Dogs are even welcome on Eh Brah tours.

Associated costs:

  • Eh Brah tour pricing depends on the size of the group however all tours include life preservers, booties, cold bottled water and sunscreen.

On the Beach is a surf shop with a large selection of surf wear to peruse. They also offer rentals for stand up paddle boards.  Stand up paddle boarding or, SUP, utilizes a board thicker than a surfboard and a long paddle to paddle around calm bodies of water while standing.

Kiteboarding is a water sport that makes use of a harness, kite and specially made board to propel you across the water. SPIkiteboarding offers a variety of lessons. You can customize your experiences from beginner one-on-one lessons, to lessons with a friend or family member, all the way up to advanced instruction. It is recommended to bring sunglasses and a UV protective shirt to your kiteboard lesson. Book lessons at the beginning of your trip so that you have time to rebook if the weather conditions are too rough. You can book online but it is best to book over the phone at: 956-772-1098.

  • Kiteboarding can be a rough, physical sport. It is not for children younger than 14 partially because of the physical requirements and also because there are technical aspects that must be learned.

Kiteboarding is a water sport that makes use of a harness, kite and specially made board to propel you across the water. Air Padre Kiteboarding offers a vast array of options including group lessons, one-on-one lessons, lessons for female groups led by a female instructor and rentals and repairs. Air Padre recommends bringing sunglasses, a UV protective shirt, water, sunscreen and booties if you have them. 

Family friendly:

  • Kiteboarding can be a rough, physical sport. It is not for children younger than 14 partially because of the physical requirements and also because there are technical aspects that must be learned.   

 

Associated costs:

  • The cost varies by skill level and specific lesson however the intro class that Air Padre requires for beginners costs $279 and lasts 3 hours in a group setting. A deposit is required and there is a rescheduling fee of $75 if you reschedule within 5 days or less of the scheduled lesson. If Air Padre reschedules for any reason, your lesson will be moved to the next available time slot and you will receive a rain check equivalent to the value of the lesson.

Parasailing

Know before you go: Parasailing does not require any experience and can offer great views of the bay and island. Parrot Eyes offers parasailing for 1, 2, or 3 people at a time. Parasailing depends on the wind. If there is not enough wind, you may not be able to go up at your scheduled time. Make sure to check in a few minutes early to do paperwork.   • Parasailing is an activity for all ages. Children need to be around 100 lbs to parasail. If they do not meet that weight requirement, they might be able to go with an adult.

Where to see Dolphins on South Padre Island

 

Osprey Cruises

 

Know before you go:Osprey Cruises traverses the Laguna Madre for an up-and-close look at the island’s native dolphin species, the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. Osprey has dolphin viewing cruises and ecological cruises. During the eco cruises, the crew brings sea creatures out of the sea and into the boat. Children and adults get the chance to touch safe sea life and learn about the species found in the laguna. The eco tour also goes out to dolphin watch. There are restrooms and an air conditioned cabin on the vessel. Tours last an hour and a half.

Family friendly:

  • Osprey’s dolphin and ecological tours are for all ages. Children and adults get a chance to touch safe sea life on the eco tours and the dolphins are non-migratory so you can view them all year long. There are restrooms and an air conditioned cabin on the vessel so fussy children and exhausted parents can cool down.

Associated costs:

  • The dolphin and ecological tours both cost $18 per adult, $15 per child 12 and under and are free for children under the age of 2. Each tour is an hour and half long.
