The Ultimate Fall Itinerary

Fall is a great time to explore South Padre Island. Temperatures hover around the mid-80s during the day. Couple that with a light sea breeze and you have comfortable weather for walking the beach or adventuring inland. Fall is the perfect time to enjoy the island life.

Explore the outdoors

The temperate fall weather is the perfect time to enjoy South Padre Island’s natural wonders. The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is a great pick for its rich wildlife and unique ecosystem. The center’s trail is a raised walkway above a portion of the natural marshes on the island. The marshes are renowned for the birds that nest there and for the unique ecosystem nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre. Large cranes and little hummingbirds, butterflies and turtles, crocodiles and fish can all be seen from the trail. It’s amazing any time of year, but fall is a particularly good time to check it out.

Sand Castle Days

Every year in the fall, master sand sculptors Walter McDonald and Lucinda Wierenga take to the sand on South Padre Islan and make larger than life sand sculptures. The event lasts for 5 days and includes music, food and of course, sand castles. You can watch the sculptures take shape or create a masterpiece yourself in the amateur competition.

There’s nothing like decompressing with the sound of the sea and the feeling of sand between your toes. Fall is just as good a time as summer and spring to visit the warm beaches of South Padre Island– if not a little better. You’ll miss the summer crowds and you’ll be there before people come down for the winter. You’ll feel like you have the beach to yourself!

And, if you want a little more adventure, head over to Schlitterbahn. The water park stays open until January with a climate-controlled indoor water park. The outdoor water park closes at the end of September, but the indoor portion makes it possible to swim long into the season. Schlitterbahn is great for families, you can bring an ice chest with food and drinks (just no glass) and parking is free. And with less dense crowds, you will have more time on the slides and other attractions at the park.

Get Spooky

South Padre Island comes alive for Halloween with music, food, and costume contests. The best part about Halloween on the island is you won’t be shivering in your costume. There are costume contests all along the island and even your furry friend can even get in on the action. Clayton’s Bar and Grill hosts Howl-O-Ween, a costume contest for dogs. The proceeds go towards Animal Rescue and the dogs are all adorable.

Cast your line

The warm waters around South Padre Island entice fish of all kinds. It’s possible to fish all year-round and fall is a great time to fish redfish, snook, and kingfish. You’ll miss the crowds from the large fishing contests in August, which means more fish for you. In the fall, the winds calm down, making fly fishing a breeze. Cooler weather makes the experience more enjoyable but the waters stay warm enough throughout the year for some species of warm-water fish. With less crowds, you’ll have an easier time booking a guided fly fishing trip or deep sea sport fishing charter.

Witness Migrating Monarchs

Every year, millions of Monarch butterflies migrate in droves to their wintering grounds in Mexico. Along the way, some make a stop on South Padre Island. You can celebrate this miraculous migration and raise money towards preserving this beautiful creature with Hallo Wings. Hallo Wings is October 27-29 and events around the island include: breakfast with the Monarchs at the SPI Birding and Nature Center, educational speakers, kid friendly events, food trucks, bird and butterfly walks, film showings and more. Hallo Wings is the chance to learn about one of the island’s beautiful creatures.
