Spring Break Family Fun

The calendar says March, and that means…Spring Break! Looking for a Spring Break getaway that checks everything off your list? Look no further than South Padre Island! Its white, sugary beaches and emerald blue waters are a natural draw for families looking for a tropical vacation destination where they can relax and reconnect.

Here’s a quick look at what the Island offers for family-friendly experiences:

Take to the wind and water with sports. Get active with kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddle boarding or flyboarding. Rent your equipment and take a lesson from a variety of expert local businesses.

Ride the waves at Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Beach Resort. Surf manmade waves, move from ride to ride without ever leaving the water, blast uphill and down on thrilling water coasters or float by on the passive rides at this tropical waterpark along the beaches of South Padre Island.

Catch a cruise with the Black Dragon. Join Captain Black-Hearted Andy, “Scourge of the Laguna Madre,” and his jolly crew on this interactive cruise. Come aboard and learn to fight like a pirate, speak like a pirate, hunt for treasure and share the booty!

Go horseback riding on the beach. Located on forty acres of land spanning from the Gulf of Mexico to the Laguna Madre Bay, The Island Adventure Park provides an unparalleled location for family adventure! Activities include horseback rides along the beach and water’s edge with rides in the remote portion of the Island that few people get to experience.

Several dolphin viewing tours are available on the Island, including Breakaway Cruises, Osprey Cruises and The Original Dolphin Watch. Choose from a variety of tours and cruises that offer everything from dolphin watching, eco-tours, snorkeling, bay and deep sea fishing, sunset and dinner cruises!

The Island is a habitat for the endangered Kemp’s Ridley species of sea turtles. Visitors can get an up-close look at these creatures at Sea Turtle, Inc., an educational, rehabilitation and rescue facility on the island. This one-of-a-kind facility just unveiled a $6 million expansion that includes a new educational center, a nature walk and an amphitheater. There is no better way to teach your children the importance of protecting sea life than visiting this Island favorite.

Spend the day at the beach and take a lesson from some of the best sandcastle artists in the state! Sandcastle lesson services include South Padre Island Sand Castle Lessons, Andy Hancock Sandcastle Lessons and Sandy Feet Sandcastle Lessons.

Hook a fish! Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy bay and deep sea fishing; Onshore or offshore, charter boats or kayaks, surf fishing or wading, you can catch a fish no matter what species you’re targeting. Many Island restaurants also offer to cook your catch.
