Sandcastles are an iconic art form for South Padre Island. In fact, it’s a part of the island’s quality of life and a unique attraction to visitors. The City of South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau is leading a sand sculptor project at the Visitor Center to rebuild the welcoming sandcastle and make improvements to the support structure and box to enable easier and regular maintenance of the iconic artwork.

“Sand sculpting and sandcastles play a significant role in the uniqueness of island life, and their impact as natural art is evident as people drive, bike or walk by sculptures on South Padre Island,” said South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Keith Arnold. “The Island is home to two master sand sculptors that not only create incredible sculptures, but also give lessons to aspiring sand sculptors of all ages.”

The Visitors Center sandcastle is the first viewed and largest sandcastle sculpture on the Island. The importance of establishing South Padre Island’s place as a major sand sculpting art destination requires this piece to be an engaging, appealing and high-quality example of sandcastle sculpture art.

The Visitors Center sandcastle also creates a culture of sharing among locals who are our champions for highlighting this unique beach activity on the island. It also provides visitors the opportunity to photograph and capture their experience with sandcastles through social media, which, in return, becomes viral and plays an integral role in driving additional visitors to South Padre Island.

Other sandcastle experiences on the island that are impacted by the appeal of renovating the Visitors Center sand sculpture include sandcastle lessons, other existing sandcastles on the Sand Castle Trail, the Sand Castle Days Festival and the potential development of more sand sculpting-centered art and events.

Visitors can follow along the rebuild project through the South Padre Island’s blog and Facebook account, which will feature project updates, photographs and videos. Insights into sandcastle building from a local expert will also be highlighted as an area artist discusses sand sculpting tips and tricks to build epic sandcastles.

The new Visitors Center sandcastle is slated for completion in the month of March. For more information on South Padre Island, please visit sopadre.com or call 1-800-SOPADRE.
