South Padre Island: Activities Bucket List

By Kimberly Maldonado

A guide to must do and see things on Texas’ only tropical island

Break out of the ordinary and check in to experience a trip of leisure and variety on the beaches of South Padre Island. A 34-mile long tropical island located on the Gulf Coast of Texas, South Padre Island is famous for its white, sandy beaches, year-round moderate temperatures and a variety of top-notch activities for adventurers of all ages. On your next visit, be sure to check these activities off of your bucket list:

Go horseback riding on the beach. The Island Adventure Park riding center has a large selection of horses specifically trained to accommodate children and first-time riders.

Take a sandcastle lesson. Book a sandcastle lesson with one of the island’s many talented Master Sand Sculptors to learn the building basics up to advanced sculpting skills. As the Sandcastle Capital of the World, your lesson will be second to none.

Get out on the water – kayaking. Calm waters and clear skies mark the ideal setting for kayak adventures on the island. One of the island’s most popular daytime water attractions, visitors can rent equipment for single, tandem, triple, fishing, glass-bottom and surf kayaks. Lessons for first-timers and rentals for all experience levels are available from multiple local vendors

Catch a wave – surfing. South Padre Island is home to the only year-round professional surfing instructors in Texas. Lessons are available daily on the Island, along with one-day surf camps that teach people from preschoolers to senior citizens how to surf.

Take flight with bird watching. The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, situated along the wetlands of the Laguna Madre Bay, features exhibits on the Island’s birds and other natural features, along with a five-story viewing tower, viewing blinds, and boardwalk nature trails.

Be dazzled by a fireworks display – beach and bayside. (Summer time only) As the official “Fireworks Capital of Texas,” South Padre Island sets off a dazzling fireworks display over the bayside every Thursday and Friday night at 9:15 p.m., and over the beachside every Friday and Saturday nights at 9:15 p.m.

Enjoy a Texas-sized sunset. They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and our island sunsets are no exception. Avoid the crowds and enjoy the perfect view from the flats (for free!) just north of the Convention Centre.
