HalloWings Across South Padre Island

Escape to Texas’ only tropical island for a fun-filled family getaway to celebrate Halloween and the annual migration of the Monarch butterfly from North America to Central Mexico. “With the annual migration cycle of the Monarch butterfly occurring the weekend before Halloween, our HalloWings festival is a perfect blend for families, nature and supernatural lovers looking for a safe and affordable option to witness one of the most remarkable natural phenomena in the world, along with festive Halloween activities,” said Keith Arnold, South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau Director. Festival activities will be held at the SPI Convention Centre, SPI Birding and Nature Center, Native Plant Center, and Jim’s Pier.

Friday, Oct. 26

Winged Gala
6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.
South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

Celebrating the migration of the endangered iconic Monarch Butterfly, the event raises funds for much needed habitat, conservation and educational programming for the Monarchs as they make their incredible migration to Mexico. Sample fine wines and local beers paired with delectable hors d’oeuvres. Listen to the sounds of folk, classical and Spanish guitar music, and enjoy beautiful works of fine art by talented local artists. The evening also includes a magical performance. Tickets are $65 per person and can be purchased at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.

Boo Bash

South Padre Island Convention Centre

Join us for a spooktacular evening featuring Halloween crafts followed by a family-friendly movie night featuring Disney’s “Hocus Pocus.” Children are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween pajamas and bring their own blankets. The event is free to the public and refreshments will be provided.

Saturday, Oct. 27

HalloWings Across South Padre Island

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

Spend the day learning all about the species and conservation efforts with various activities, including guided butterfly and bird walks, nature film showings, and a live butterfly tent! There will also be entertainment, vendors, and food trucks on site. Don’t miss the newest addition to HalloWings, the unLITTER Trashion Show. The show will be at 11 a.m., featuring costumes made from discarded beach umbrellas, boogie board skins, tents, bags, and the ubiquitous plastic straws. “The Trashion Show is a fun way to bring about awareness about litter and be mindful of our impact on the environment,” said environmental activist, artist, and designer Nancy Patterson.

The neighboring Native Plant Center will be hosting Native Plant Garden Crawls at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (tickets are $10 per person). The Center will also host a Happy Hour and Shrimp Boil from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. (tickets are $20 per person).

Enjoy a breakfast buffet at Jim’s Pier before boarding the Black Dragon Pirate Ship, a modern day replica of a 17th Century Galleon. Before boarding the ship, guests will enjoy a breakfast buffet featuring the pirates of the Laguna Madre, and be entertained with stories, treasure hunts and more! The Black Dragon Cruise takes off from Pirate’s Landing (Port Isabel) at noon and is suitable for guests and families of all ages. Space is limited; reservations will guarantee you a spot!
