One of the best things about South Padre Island is the food. The culinary scene is a mix of Latin and Mexican inspired dishes and classic American fair. It goes without saying that the seafood is divine, but there is more to South Padre Island’s restaurants than the usual.
To eat your way around the island, start at Ceviche Ceviche. The name says it all, this tiny restaurant serves up ceviche, raw fish marinated in lime or lemon juice. Ceviche Ceviche is a popular local favorite, the line will be out the door before lunch time, and the menu has quite a few types of ceviche to choose from. Bring some friends and enjoy this refreshing dish.
Another local favorite is Yummies Bistro. South Padre Island is known for its seafood, but there are other delicious offerings as well. Yummies is open for breakfast and lunch. The menu features the 3 S’s: soup, salad and sandwiches– and you can’t go wrong with whatever you choose. Leave room for dessert though, the pies are made in house and come highly recommended. Blueberry, chocolate pecan, banana, and grapefruit pie are all favorites.
For upscale seafood, you can’t beat Sea Ranch Restaurant-Bar. The seafood is fresh and carefully prepared, the wait staff is top notch, and there is a full drink menu complete with a comprehensive wine list. While the menu focuses on seafood, the steak and chicken choices are savory as well. This place is perfect for date nights or a special occasion.
For the next food stop, it’s time to head down to the beach. Corrugated metal decorated with large bright signs makes up the outside of the restaurant Pier 19. Located directly on the pier, this restaurant serves up delicious seafood and Mexican food. The fish tacos and onion rings are favorites and the atmosphere is great for family dining. The views of the sea top off the experience at this local restaurant.
While you can never have too much seafood, sometimes you do need a break. Gabriella’s Italian Grill and Pizzeria serves up delicious Italian in a classically Italian themed space. The menu has all the staples including: bruschetta, minestrone soup, shrimp scampi, chicken saltimbocca and a lot more. Gabriella’s also has some of the best pizza on the island. Pig out on some of the best Italian around.
Finishing things off is Padre Brewing Co., an island ale house. Padre Brewing Co. makes handcrafted beers and hearty American fair with some fresh seafood dishes thrown in for good measure. The menu won’t leave you wanting, with options like brewpub burgers, buffalo wings and baskets of fried shrimp. Bring your family or a group of friends, you’re in for some good food.
