2018 Summer Fishing Tournaments to Plan For

Thanks to year-round temperate waters, South Padre Island is home to several top notch fishing tournaments. Anglers of all ages and skill-levels compete for sought-after catches, including redfish, flounder, trout and kingfish. Mark your calendars for these signature fishing events and get ready to cast off!

Shallow Sport Tournament | May 18 & 19 | Website

Kick off summer with the Shallow Sport Tournament where anglers compete to nab the largest redrum, trout and flounder. 250+ Shallow Sport Boats race off at the sound of the blast at the Island’s oldest and biggest cannon take-off. Regardless of whether you’re going for the trophies, bragging rights, or just want to “sit on the sidelines,” this event is fun for all ages. A Friday night social will be held at Louie’s Backyard, including live music, appetizers, and raffle contests.

Dargel Boat Owners Tournament | June 1-3 | Website

This early summer event bills itself as “food, fun and fishing for the entire family.” The Dargel Boat Owners Tournament is a redfish spot tournament that includes kids and juniors divisions. Raffles and door prizes are given out throughout the tournament, and both competitors and spectators come together over food at the end of each day.

Texas International Fishing Tournament | August 1-5 | Website

This year marks the 79th annual Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT), the largest saltwater fishing tournament in Texas. TIFT attracts around 1,500 anglers and 500 boats, as well as competitors of all ages and experience levels. If you’d rather just watch, you won’t be alone. An estimated 10,000 spectators will turn up to watch the weekend’s events. Spectators can expect to see large blue and white marlin, as well as sailfish, redfish, speckled trout and flounder.

The atmosphere the weekend of the competition is lively and exciting – especially at weigh-ins. Any time of year is a great time to visit South Padre Island, but TIFT adds a little something special to the Island, bringing the vibrant community together around a cherished pastime.

Ladies Kingfish Tournament | August 10-12 | Website

The Ladies Kingfish Tournament (LKT) is an exciting summer event that you won’t want to miss. Divided into two divisions — Bay and Offshore — the LKT was the first all ladies fishing tournament in the State of Texas. Anglers fishing in the Bay Division will vie for trophies in the categories of Redfish, Trout and Flounder, while anglers in the Offshore Division compete in the categories of King, Bonito, Blackfin Tuna and Dolphinfish. If you’re not familiar with Kingfish (or King Mackerel), they can put up quite a fight. The Offshore winner from last year caught three fish for a combined weight of almost 40 pounds!

Fishing for Hope | August 25 and 26 | Website

Now the largest non-profit fishing tournament on the Texas coast, Fishing for Hope is a family-friendly event where competitors of all ages hit the water looking for big fish. This event will include auctions, raffles, music and more, raising the Hope Family Health Center. Fishing for Hope not only raises money for a worthy cause, but it’s a great way to close out the summer!
