2019 Fishing Tournaments to Plan For

Thanks to year-round temperate waters, South Padre Island is home to several top notch fishing tournaments. Anglers of all ages and skill-levels compete for sought-after catches, including redfish, flounder, trout and kingfish. Mark your calendars for these signature fishing events and get ready to cast off!

Texas International Fishing Tournament

July 31 – August 4 | Website

This year marks the 80th annual Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT), the largest saltwater fishing tournament in Texas. TIFT attracts around 1,500 anglers and 500 boats, as well as competitors of all ages and experience levels. If you’d rather just watch, you won’t be alone. An estimated 10,000 spectators will turn up to watch the weekend’s events. Spectators can expect to see large blue and white marlin, as well as sailfish, redfish, speckled trout and flounder.

Ladies Kingfish Tournament

The Ladies Kingfish Tournament (LKT) is an exciting summer event that you won’t want to miss. Divided into two divisions — Bay and Offshore — the LKT was the first all ladies fishing tournament in the State of Texas. Anglers fishing in the Bay Division will vie for trophies in the categories of Redfish, Trout and Flounder, while anglers in the Offshore Division compete in the categories of King, Bonito, Blackfin Tuna and Dolphinfish. If you’re not familiar with Kingfish (or King Mackerel), they can put up quite a fight. The Offshore winner from 2017 caught three fish for a combined weight of almost 40 pounds!

Fishing for Hope

Now the largest non-profit fishing tournament on the Texas coast, Fishing for Hope is a family-friendly event where competitors of all ages hit the water looking for big fish. This event will include auctions, raffles, music and more, raising the Hope Family Health Center. Fishing for Hope not only raises money for a worthy cause, but it’s a great way to close out the summer!

Shallow Stalker Boat Owners Fishing Tournament

September 6 & 7 | Website

All Shallow Stalker Boat owners are invited to this annual fishing tournament with adult and junior divisions. Teams will compete for the heaviest red drum, trout, flounder and more! 

J.J. Zapata Fishing Tournament

September 13 & 14 | Website

The Jaime J. Zapata Fishing Tournament is a memorial event honoring Special Agent Jaime Jorge Zapata, who was killed on February 15, 2011 in the line of duty, and other agents who have given their lives while in service to our country. The tournament is a boat/team bay fishing tournament with trout, redfish and flounder as eligible species. The proceeds are used to award scholarships.

SPI Wahoo Classic 

September 13-15 | Website

A boat tournament awarding cash prizes to the top five fish (1st, 2nd & 3rd largest Wahoo, largest Dorado and largest Blackfin Tuna). Although this is a traditional offshore tournament, “Go Fast,” trailerable, center console boats are invited and encouraged to participate. Proceeds from the SPI Wahoo Classic tournament are donated to the Laguna Madre Education Fund which provides scholarships to local high school students.

Elite Redfish Tournament

October 4-6 | Website

The 2019 Elite Redfish Tournament season concludes in beautiful South Padre Island during the best time of the year with the Atlas All Star Team Tour Championship. It is the culmination of the most lucrative, prestigious, and professional redfish tournament series in the country. Fans and spectators will be able to follow the series as they compete in a high-energy competition!
