There’s something for everyone on South Padre Island. You’ll find that the island hosts an incredible diversity of family, sporting, and nature events all year round.
Springtime on South Padre Island brings celebrations both holy and wild. It’s wedding season, and there’s no better place to create an eternal partnership than on the serene beaches where the sea meets the land. Easter and Semana Santa (Holy Week) bring in many extended families and international tourists celebrating a sacred, spiritual time together with the beautiful beaches of South Padre Island as a backdrop. In contrast, spring break makes for many families and students a beachside getaway, and the LGBTQ community celebrates pride and unity with Splash, a weekend long event complete with parties, stage shows, and formal events. In April, fireworks on the beach begin and explode every Friday and Saturday night for months to come. And of course, all year round you can shop for local fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, juices, and more at the South Padre Island Farmer’s Market, held every Sunday from 11AM to 1PM. For those who’d like to burn calories and seek thrills by the sea, the annual Jailbreak Beach Escape offers a challenging 5k run over more than 20 sandy, wet, crazy obstacles followed by a Texas sized party at Clayton’s. Cyclists will enjoy Pedal to Padre, a bicycle tour beginning at the Brownsville Event Center and ending at the Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island, where discounts are available to event participants.
During the hot summer months, TIFT (Texas International Fishing Tournament) brings in waves of anglers hoping to catch a piece of prize money in the sparkling waters of the Laguna Madre Bay and Gulf of Mexico. Texas’ largest saltwater fishing tournament, TIFT attracts about 10,000 spectators, 1,500 anglers, and 500 boats during its two days of fishing and fun. While the big boats bring in blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish, bay anglers haul in delectable speckled trout, redfish and flounder; even youngsters can bait their hooks and walk away with a trophy just for participating. Independence Day is also a perfect time to bring the whole family for the summer long fireworks and Fourth of July festivities.
When summer turns to fall, South Padre Island’s famous Sandcastle Days bring out some of the world’s best seaside sculptors. When you’re not gazing awestruck at masterfully built sand sculptures, you’ll enjoy sandcastle building lessons for the whole family, treasure hunts, photo ops, amateur competitions, and more. An annual Walk for Women raises funds for breast cancer research and includes a casino night and fishing tournament, and the Glow Dash 5k encourages health and wellness through a race where participants light up the night in flashy, glowing neon costumes. The Annual World Championship Shrimp cook off brings.
