Each year, visitors looking to exchange frigid temperatures and shoveling snow for endless sunshine and a welcoming beach community, flock to South Padre Island. The only tropical island in Texas, South Padre Island boasts year-round moderate temperatures that make the beaches perfect for strolling and collecting shells, fishing, or simply setting up a chair and watching the waves roll in.

Beyond the beach, South Padre Island offers abundant wildlife, water sports, local shopping, unique events and robust dining and entertainment options. Visitors might head down south for the weather, but they’ll stay (and return!) for the fun!

South Padre Island is better than ever – Make it yours.

Here’s a look at a small selection of the countless attractions that lure Winter Texans:

Exceptional birding watching. In October and November, fall migration brings many new species to the Island; after that, wintering birds take center stage. The South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center offers exhibits on birding and other natural features of the Island, along with a five-story viewing tower, viewing blinds and boardwalk nature trails. Guided birding tours by land and water are also available.

Giant sea turtles. Visitors can view and learn about these appealing creatures, including the endangered Kemp’s Ridley, at Sea Turtle, Inc., a rescue, rehabilitation and conservation facility currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation.

Take to the water with sports. Get active and take up kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddle boarding or flyboarding. Rent your equipment and take a lesson from a variety of expert, local vendors.

Dolphin watch tours. A few of the most popular tours include Breakaway Cruises, Osprey Cruises and The Original Dolphin Watch. All three boast a success rate of nearly 100 percent due to the sheer number of dolphins residing off the island’s shores.

Shop local. Browse the unique offerings of local and regional vendors on the island’s main shopping strip and at SPI’s 2018 Market Days. This year, Market Days takes place Jan. 5 – 8, 2018 at the SPI Convention Centre, and features hand crafted jewelry, collectible and unique arts and crafts, gourmet treats and health products and home décor.

Hook a fish and cook your catch! Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy bay and deep sea fishing; inshore or offshore, charter boats or kayaks, surf fishing or wading, you can get bowed up no matter what species you’re targeting. After a long day of fishing, ask your guide about local spots that will cook your catch to your liking.
