“Big Padre” Arrives on South Padre Island

Saturday, May 11, 2019 — South Padre Island

Come and share the excitement of the Grand Opening of the new American Alligator Sanctuary at the South Padre Birding and Nature Center!

Be there as juvenile rescue alligators are released into their new home! Then meet “Big Padre” a 12 foot, 700lb, 50-year old alligator as he discovers his very own private pond where he will live out his life in safety.

Meet Gary and Shannon Saurage of Gator Country Rescue in Beaumont, Tx, who have been featured on Animal Planet’s Lone Star Law and CMT’s Gator 911. Gator Country Rescue holds the only license in Texas to rescue nuisance alligators from backyards, ponds and swimming pools, as well as gators stranded after severe weather and floods. This team of experts round them up and provide them a safe haven, which now includes the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary.

There will be fun for the whole family including opportunities to have your photo taken holding baby alligators, and even wade with them in the new ‘gator wading pool! Get up close and personal with non-venomous snakes and interact with Sulcata Tortoises.

The South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary is excited to have the opportunity to entertain and educate the public about these magnificent creatures while providing them a safe home in secure enclosures approved by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Join us on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Doors open at 9 a.m. Overflow parking available at Clayton’s Beach Bar and the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
