A Tropical Holiday
The holiday season is a time to gather together and exchange stories, gifts and food. Stringing a Christmas tree with lights, carving a turkey and volunteering time are just a few of the ways people come together. You can make this time of year even more special by gathering the family for a little island time.
Turkey, football, a mountain of filling side dishes and the Macy’s parade are all part and parcel of Thanksgiving. If you’re on South Padre Island for this time of thanks, head to Isla Blanca park for beach time and a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner is Thursday, November 23 at 1p.m. in the Bingo Hall. The meal is free after you pay to get into the park.
If you’re visiting South Padre Island to swim, head to Schlitterbahn’s heated indoor waterpark and stop by their Thanksgiving Day buffet. The buffet includes all the favorites: oven roasted turkey, glazed ham, peel and eat gulf shrimp, garlic mashed potatoes, candied yams and more. If you stay at the Schlitterbahn Resort, the Thanksgiving Day buffet is free.
Christmas evokes images of brightly wrapped gifts, traditional songs and sleigh tracks in the snow. You’re probably not thinking about seafood and palm trees when you think of Christmas, but that doesn’t stop South Padre Island from taking advantage of mild temperatures and an island spirit to get into the Christmas mood.
From December 1-3, South Padre Island celebrates Christmas starting out with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The festivities continue with performances and parades, including a lighted boat parade on the Laguna Madre Bay. Breakfast with Santa caps off the celebrations.
You can’t go wrong with a little island time and that’s even more true when you’re celebrating the holidays with loved ones.
