You don’t have to break the bank during your next visit to South Padre Island. There are plenty of fun things to do that are under $10, here are some ideas for your next visit!

See Sea Turtles

Learn everything you wanted to know about sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc. This organization works to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured sea turtles as well as make sure baby sea turtles safely make it to the ocean after hatching.

You can watch turtles in the outdoor tanks, listen to “Turtle Talks” and watch the turtles be feed in ways that simulate the seagrass beds in the Laguna Madre.

Cost: Sea Turtles Inc. asks for donations of $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for children over the age of 4

Go Bird Watching

For birds crossing the Gulf of Mexico, South Padre Island is a well needed pit-stop. The natural marshes, dune meadows and intertidal flats combine to make a unique habitat that draws wildlife of all kinds. The South Padre Island Birding Center provides close-up encounters with the beautiful wildlife. Boardwalks over the marshes provide picture perfect angles. There are also 5 bird blinds and a 5-story tower with spectacular views.

The birding and nature center is also home to more than birds. You can see American alligators lurking in the marshes, turtles and fish swimming in the brackish water and butterflies fluttering around the thick growth of plants.

Cost: $6 for adults, $5 for students 13-18 and seniors 55+, $3 for children 4-12, and free for children under 4 years old with a paid adult.

Hours: 9am-5pm Monday and Tuesday, 7am-5pm Wednesday-Sunday

Get close to South Padre Island’s sea life at the Dolphin Research and Sea Life Nature Center. Aquariums showcase beautiful fish, starfish, crabs, octopi and even snails that live in SPI’s waters. Staff are on hand to answer your questions and tell you about the amazing critters. Dip your hands in any of the touch tanks and feel the sea life. You might also get the chance to feed Domino the turtle.

Marin artist Robert Wyland is famous for painting marine murals. He’s painted 100 murals in 13 different countries to raise awareness for conservation efforts. One of his 100 Whalling Walls is here, on South Padre Island! Whaling Wall #52, “Orcas off the Gulf of Mexico,” stretches around 3 sides of the South Padre Island Convention Center. Take in the artwork and get some great photos of a unique piece of art.

Imagine gentle waves, lapping the shore, and warm sunshine on your face. In my opinion, the beach is the most relaxing place to be. It effortlessly offers entertainment for everyone– from thrill seekers to those of us just looking to relax. South Padre Island has plenty of soft sandy beaches for everyone, and with around 300 days of sunshine, you won’t miss out on good weather, no matter when you visit.
